Recently(2006), Dr.Alan Wilton located the gene responsible for this fatal disease. In the summer of 2006, I discovered the hard way that one of my girls, Jane, was a carrier for this disease. The good that came of this was that Alan was able to use this litter to confirm some of the details of his research and that he was also able to test for the gene in individuals directly realated to known carriers. Since we knew that Jane was a carrier because she produced affected puppies, nearly all of my dogs were able to be tested. The results of these tests can be found at Border Collie Health. Please note that at this early date, it will appear that certain kennels and bloodlines are the major source of this disease. Dr. Wilton does not believe that this is true, but since we can only test these directly related individuals at present, some "lines" will seem to be over-represented. When the test for the general population is released, hopefully within the year, it may well sadly confirm that this problem is more widespread than anyone thought. We are so very fortunate, as Border Collie breeders, to have the (soon to be) three DNA tests for genetic diseases, two of which are 100% fatal. (CL & TNS) My webmaster will put each dog's DNA TNS test results up on each dog's page along with their CEA, CL and OFA results in as timely a manner as she can. At this time (early 2007), I am still awaiting further test results on more of my dogs. These will all be posted on the link below as well as the pages on my site. As with CEA and CL, a "carrier" for TNS is at no risk of developing the disease. The risk is in breeding, and with the test we will be able to breed carriers to clear/normals and never again produce a TNS affected puppy. I believe that within 15 years or less, these three diseases will be nothing more than history for our beloved breed. Together, we will make this happen! |
